Being a city girl trying to learn to live simply sounded well, – simple. But the more I moved into the simple living philosophy the more I wanted to do. The first time I made homemade noodles, I made a mess but they were yummy.But the biggest bummer was that I destroyed my acrylic nails and that didn’t make me happy.I finally asked myself, " what are you doing"?I never wanted to be a pioneer but I do want to at least be able to take care of myself and my family … if I ever have to. Those delightful books are called The Foxfire Books.
Foxfire is a series of books based on Appalachian culture. These books are a treasure trove of information about Appalachian folklore, history, and traditional skills. Best of all, they are direct and unpretentious, being the result of a forty-year-long project which has high school students approaching their parents and grandparents, collecting their wisdom, and setting it down in writing.
In 1966, Eliot Wigginton’s English class decided to do a magazine and, as their interest in it grew and ideas began to form, the students decided to talk with their grandparents and track down and record tales of the other elders-stories that had been almost forgotten. Those first students and the students who followed in their footsteps, have now recorded the heritage of the Appalachian area for forty years.
The books have interesting stories, folklore and a wealth of education.Some of the information you may not use but it is never boring! It's been a year of adventure and great insight for us. We are finally in NC and very happy to be close to our daughter. We made it in the nick of time it seems because the economy is a little rocky. No, we haven't pod faded or fallen off the planet. Our schedule has been so crazy these last few months and there just have been time to bring out a new episode. Penny and I really miss doing the shows and we will be back very soon. Our move to North Carolina will be on Tuesday the 6th of November 2007.
